Another St. John-related question
 

Where to rent a car: St. Thomas or St. John? Are there cheaper places to purchase groceries on St. Thomas as opposed to St. John? We are staying on St. John, but saw some message postings about a place called Cost-U-Less on St. Thomas that might be good for groceries. Thoughts please!

Personally, I'd rent on STJ. Yes, there is a Cost-U-Less on STT, but STJ has a few grocery stores that will more than satisfy your villa provisioning. If you feel the need to bring some more select cuts of meat, pack a cooler with frozen steaks and chicken as sometimes the selection in the stores can be hit & miss. There is little cost difference in renting a vehicle on STJ or STT.

I agree with CaribbeanSoul, we always rent on STJ. That way if somthing happens to the car, the company is on the island. There is one rental company on STT that won't let you take cars over. It's really a matter of personal preference.

As far as groceries, there are plenty of markets on STJ although you will have some sticker shock. Cost U Less is more of a bulk place I understand, so it might not really save you money in the long run. We always bring some favorite snack foods with us. In Coral Bay there is Lily's and Love City Markets (I haven't been in those to have seen the selection). In Cruz Bay there is Dolphin, Starfish and Pine Peace Markets. Starfish has the largest selection and there is an excellent Gourmet Market right across from it. I love that store for cheese and finger foods. It is pricey though.

I also agree about the cooler if you like certain meats. I know alot of people who do that. We call them "cooler people". I don't mess with it for the two of us because we eat most dinners out or do take out.

We too always rent our car on STJ. If you are going during high season try to rent from someone that has a little parking lot. Courtesy Car Rental has worked great for us on our last two trips. As far as groceries go we bring coffee, equal & forzen meats with us on the plane. It saves a ton of money.

Just a reminder, if you take the car ferry round trip to shop in St. Thomas, it'll add $60 to your tab which would pretty much wipe out most of your savings. Unless, you do rent in St. Thomas and shop before you go over the STJ. As Pulley said, bringing it with you will usually save you plenty.
