Amsterdam-like coffeshops?
Since St.Maarten is Dutch, is it legal to smoke marijuana there?
|
I was waiting for someone to answer who might have been there but since no one has, I'm going to say I think not. It's not even legal in all of the Netherlands, just in certain designated areas.

This page: http://www.cweek.com/rr14jul.html , includes this:

"Several people had reported individuals selling marijuana and other illegal substances to the sailors in plain view and broad daylight."

:) Liz
I should certainly hope the Dutch "coffeeshops" are not legal in St. Maarten, or at any rate not such a general phenomenon as here in Holland, where they are a source of annoyance and the (I think) unpleasant smell of marihuana. Not that I'm opposed to legalising soft drugs - I'm not. But I don't like these coffeeshops!
I have been to St. Maarten several times and thank goodness I have never seen any "coffeeshops". Hope that this remains this way!

I live on SXM and it definitely is not legal anywhere on the island

Brian, although not 'legal' on any Caribbean island, it is certainly available.

It isn't *legal* in Amsterdam, either, just tolerated. We were there last May and did stop in one of the places called "Rookies" near the Leidesplein. They serve alcohol and about six different varieties of pot. Very interesting place...

In Nassau for example, you will get asked several times a day if you want to 'party'. If you do, don't be too 'public' about it.

Go to Jamaica. I couldn't take two steps without being offered drugs. Dealers in boats even tried to sell drugs to people as they were swimming. What a place.
