Airport Tax - Varadero
I read, the airport tax (international outbound flights) is US$ 20.-.
Please, can somebody confirm that this is still correct?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, you will need $20 U.S. to pay the departure tax. You need to pay this before they will let you on the plane.

Carolred Mar 25th, 2003 10:22 AM

No, it has been $25 for some time now.

The departure tax (from any Cuban departure point) is USD $25.00 and MUST be paid in CASH only. Don't expect to put this on a credit card etc., as I have seen some people stuck at the airport because they did not have cash.

It's really easy though. In Havana, you just check in, dump your bags and get your boarding pass. Then you go to a wicket (like a bank teller), pay your tax and they affix a stamp to the back of your boarding pass. Then on to immigration control to exit the country.

Have fun in Cuba
Steve
Thanks to all of you. Appreciate it.

I know that is has to be paid in cash only, and I was asking mainly because I don't want to have troubles in case, I shouldn't have enough US$ left, but then, I don't want to have left too many either, not knowing when I will need them again.

Only two more weeks to go!

Hi Ursula,

Please post a trip report when you come back. We're hoping go to to Cuba in October or November with another couple. I'd love to read your impressions.

I don't know if this information will be helpful, but when I left Cuba in addition to the airport tax, they were charging us $2 a kilogram for any luggage over 20 kilos. Just another cash concern you may wish to be aware of.

Two_Cats Mar 29th, 2003 05:45 PM

Is it really up to $25 now..I'll swear we paid twenty bucks in November when we left from Cayo Coco.
And they are now charging for overweight bags..as I recall when that was first announced that they would charge for overweight, there was such a hue and cry here in Canada that they said this overage charge would not apply to tourists.

Canuck_at_Canada_eh Mar 29th, 2003 07:03 PM

Hi Debbie: (a.k.a Two_cats)

Yes it really is $25 now. The charge for overweight luggage is pretty standard for airlines. I think what you are referring to with the hue and cry was that Cuba floated an idea of charging an import duty per kilo for all goods brought into their country. As the proposal was first written it would have included absolutely everything a person brought into Cuba. Thankfully common sense prevailed and they "clarified" their position to state that tourists were exempt. The import duties are now only for business travellers bringing business goods into the country. Doesn't concern us at all as tourists. Hope that clears things up.

You can check out all the Cuban customs regulations at....
http://www.aduana.islagrande.cu/
This is the Cuban Customs website.

Steve
