A week in Vieques Dec08/Jan 09
We just got back from our second visit to Vieques and spent a couple of nights in PR at the end of the trip.
Here's a link to a report that I wrote on Tripadvisor.

Hi beanweb, we just might go back for Thanksgiving 2009.
Our first trip to Vieques was over Thanksgiving in 2006 and it was considerably quieter than this visit over New Year. It's all relative of course and we didn't find the beaches crowded exactly; sometimes there were 5 or 6 family groups at a particular beach so we moved on to another...
The Malecon was busy every evening. We tended to eat dinner at around sunset or just after and the restaurants were always hopping.
The best tips I can give you are to check the luna calendar for the biobay before you book your trip and book a hire car way in advance (especially over the holidays) as there weren't any available while we were there (we booked ours about 4 months prior to the trip).

Sassy cat- how far away from the waterfront was the house you rented? The website says "a short distance" which can mean almost anything! It looks nice- was the location one you would choose again?
Thanks for the info- I have been to Culebra but not Vieques and am bookmarking places for a future trip.

ishkribbl,
Yes, we'd stay at Casa Des Moines again. The house is a short walk from the Malecon. We didn't walk into town once as we had the car but I estimate it would be less than a 10 minute walk or about 4 blocks.
I do recommend you hire a car while on Vieques if you want to visit all the fabulous beaches.
