A Little More Help with 10 hours in Puerto Rico
 

Got one good suggestion from this thread to go to Old San Juan, we are staying at the airport to catch a flight first thing the next day,and to eat at Parrot Club. With some but limited walking, bad knee, is this the best bet. If so, where should taxi leave us off to get to a little history (last time was 10 years ago) some quality art galleries if they exist and shops but NOT trinkets. What type of food is served at Parrot Club? Is it Air-Conditioned?Easy to get taxi for ~$20 back to airport from town at 8-9:00PM?

Bearing in mind your knee, Old San Juan may be difficult as It's hilly and cobbled. We walked from El Morro and it's about half a mile downhill to the restaurants/shops. Maybe just walking around El Morro might be enough then take a taxi directly to the restaurant....

Is it a steep walk for if not I can probablyhandle it.

Is the Parrot Club the place to eat as suggested by another Fodorite? I am most interested in A/C if Parrot Club food is good. Do you happen to know?

Also, after dinner, 8+/-PM will I be able to get a taxi right there for the trip back to the airport and the rate be ~$20-$25? Thanks. We leave Monday afternoon for San Juan.

It is fairly steep from El Morro... at least it was the way we walked. There were taxis at El Morro (which closes at 6pm.
I don't know which restaurants are air-conditioned. We ate at one on the square called something like the Puerto Rico Cafe?? which had ceiling fans.

Our hotel had an excellent restaurant guide (called Tables I think) and it listed all the restaurants by area. It was very detailed and described the cost/cuisine and decor/AC etc so ask on arrival for a copy.

I liked the look of the restaurant at the El Convento Hotel which is quite close to El Morro. Puerto rican cuisine... but my kids didn't like the menu :(

Parrot Club is air-conditioned. It is very good - serving nuevo Puerto Rican fare. It gets pretty crowded, so I would suggest that you make a reservation, unless you plan on going for an early dinner.

stan - I just ate lunch (well brunch) at Parrot Club on Saturday. Very good. I have eaten there many times before. It does have AC. Very trendy place, great for lunch. Parrot Club is nuevo latino ( I think thats what the menu says)
The taxis sit right at the end of the street (Fortaleza) so walk out of Parrot Club and go to your left and the taxis are right there.
The streets are cobblestone, but there are sidewalks everywhere. There are lots of stores. There are also several squares so you can sit and rest if you need to. Most of the shops are on the same street as Parrot Club. However, Cristo which is the street el convento is on have many upscale outlet stores.
The taxi was I think $16. There are set fares.
