50 minute connection to St Thomas in Miami

Hello, all! I am currently in an flight situation. Our cheapest flight option is to leave Nashville at 6am on a Saturday, connect in Miami for 50 min and then catch the flight to St Thomas. We will be checking one bag. All is on American Airlines. Another option is to take a later flight out of Miami, but arrive in St Thomas at 2:30, which makes catching our ferry to Virgin Gorda tight. A more expensive option (by about $250 total) is to take a US Air flight through Charlotte that gives us almost a 2hr layover AND gets us to STT with ample time to spare for the ferry. I don't really know what to do. The 50 min makes me nervous...both for us and our checked bag, but the 2:30 arrival and only and hour to catch the ferry gives me pause, as well! Do you guys have an opinion? We have flown through both Charlotte and Miami to get to the Caribbean, but I do not recall our connection times in Miami. Thanks so much!

Thanks for this economic option . I will definitely going to try the first option!

50 minutes in MIA is doable but is tight and allows no room for any type of delay. You can make it if your inbound flight arrives "on time". One point in your favor is the AA Flight from Nashville usually arrives in Terminal D and the flight to STT departs out of the same terminal. It could be a long walk between gates but there is a "Air Tram" you can take that runs about every 3 minutes which can shorten the time between gates.

Do remember, your connecting flight will begin boarding about 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure and you never know exactly when the Gate Agent will"close" the boarding process so if you choose to try and make this connection don't dilly-dally when you travel between gates.

Sorry, can't make any predictions about the transfer of your luggage.

Really, this is one of those times when you have to be aware that Murphy's Law of Airports may choose to play havoc with your planes. Make sure you know what your options are if you do miss your connection.

You would probably make it but I'm not as sure about your bag. If you do this, make sure you have your bathing suit in your carry on!

I think you might make it but your bag would not. I would go with the more expensive, relaxing, and sure option myself. I think it would be $250 well spent.

If you're willing to go with a carry-on only, then I *might* risk the #1 idea.

Think I am cutting the 50 min layover option. Too inherently risky for my tastes. I am leaning toward arriving at 2:30 and catching the 4pm ferry.

Thanks, guy!
