4x4 or car for Grand Cayman?
Hope to head to Grand Cayman in the spring to check out the snorkeling and will be staying near 7 mile beach.
Is $550/week for 4x4 worth it in terms of getting around the island, finding other snorkel sites over standard car rate for $350/week?((?)) Appreciate suggestions for lower car rental rates. |
John,
You definitely do (NOT) need 4WD for GC. All the snorkeling spots can easily be reached via a regular car. We find the cheapest we can that has a/c, thats about it. |
I agree with Scott. No need for a 4wd on GC. The jeeps are a lot of fun but if you want the AC get the car.

The other thing to consider is the high cost of gas on the island, now at about US$4.70/gallon. Go for the car with good gas mileage!

Thanks for sharing your G.C. itinerary suggestions.:S- |
Ah, but at least it is US$4.70 per Imperial Gallon (20fl oz to teh pint, not 16).. that's more like US$3.75 per US gallon... small mercies :)
Mind you, it is a small island.. you'd struggle to use more than $10 worth of gas in a week anyway ! |
OK Tom, but when I was on the island for 5 weeks (May-June) I was using my hosts' Ford SUV and could only make 3 trips to GT before spending CI$45 to fill up the tank. Go for the smaller car with better mpg.
