3 weeks in Puerto Rico

My husband and I are looking to travel to Puerto Rico in January for about a month. We would like to see the whole Island and would like to stay in 3-5 different locations in order to enjoy the different areas. We will probably do AirBnB or VRBO. We are adventurous in our late 50's-early 60's. What do you recommend for areas to stay?

My choices would be Old San Juan, Ponce & Vieques. Maybe add one more for particular activities such as a particular beach or golf, if you like. Otherwise, those 3 will give you a broad range of experiences and within driving distance of others like El Yunque.

You may also want to look into Rincon.

Thank you. Those look like good spots. We will try those. What do you think about staying in Luquillo as a base for that side of the island?

Something on the west coast like Rincon is really a must. Drier weather and few winter crowds. Most of the Rincon beaches are rough surf and rocky but there are very nice beaches south of there like in Añasco and south of Mayagüez.

I would definitely recommend you go to Vieques during your visit. You should plan to spend 5 - 7 days there if possible so that you can explore the beaches, wildlife preserve and visit the bio bay. The pace on the island is very different than what you will find on the main island. I can recommend restaurants, places to stay, etc. if you decide to go there.

I have 2 days booked in Vieques, but would love recommendations for places to stay, go, etc.

Most villa rentals would be for 5 night minimum, but I would recommend El Blok which is a hotel in Esperanza. I have not stayed there, but have heard good things and the location is great. You should definitely do the Bio Bay while in Vieques - it is supposed to be the brightest in the world. Would generally recommend you spend most of your time at the beaches in the wildlife preserve as the beaches are beautiful and quiet - there are many to see. My favorites are La Chiva, Caracas and Sun Bay. Favorite restaurants are El Quinepo, Bananas, Coqui Fire Cafe and Tin Box. Also, be sure to eat at Sol Food which is a food truck near the entrance to the beaches - only open on the weekends. Have fun!
