Your Favorite places to dine in Montreal?

From the cheap eateries to the expensive restaurants...what are your favorite places to dine in Montreal? (and while we're at it---where to stay away from too!)

We stayed in Old Montreal in early Oct.04 and the restaurant we enjoyed most was Pavarotti's located in Old Montreal (sorry, don't have address)-- ambiance, service, food and prices -- great. Located across the street from Bonaparte's where we also ate one night - and which is highly acclaimed I understand. Thought the food there was fine, much more expensive and service not as good (it was very busy and waiter wasn't very attentive to the few tables in our section). Also ate at Vieux Port Restaurant, also in Old Montreal - extremely busy, tables too crowded together and noisy, but food and prices fine, but overall nothing special. We'd go back to Pavarotti's for sure.....however, since there is so much to see in this world and so little time, doubt we'll be back to Montreal!!

You should check out "L'Academie" on St.Denis (bring your own wine place), a new favorite among locals.
Also great Italian place is DaVinci on Bishop or "Roberto's " on Belanger East (a little far from downtown, but worth it !!) and some of the best fish places are "Molivos" on Guy or "La Sirene de la Mer" on Jean Talon(near cote des neige) , that's MidTown and has beautiful decor. (you'll need a taxi ride). If price is no object , the go to Milos on Park Ave., very fine Greek and Mediterranean dining.
For a quick bite , check Parthenon on van horne , best cheap souvlaki joint in Mtl!
For pitas and schwarmas , go to Chez Benny's on Queen Mary (It's kosher, so closed on Fri night& Saturdays).
oh and for excellent pizza go to California Pizza on Decarie(Mondays & Tues they have great specials!!!)

Low end, Schwartz's Hebrew Deli on St. Laurent, and Ben's Deli, downtown.

High end, Chex La Mere Michel on Guy Street, just south of St. Catherine, and The BEaver Club, in the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth.

One of our favorite ways to dine in Montreal is to get a good bottle of wine, and choose one of the byob places on and around Duluth Street.

For a really low-end, on-the-go meal: St. Viateur Bagels, on St. Viateur near Park Ave. Absolutely the best bagels in the world.

Well, St Viateur bagels aren't bad. In fact they're very good. But the best bagels in the world come from Fairmont Bagel!

For expensive restaurants, Buona Notte and Mediterraneo, and for a cheap eatery, Frank. You'll get your money's worth at all three. Just ask Jean Brault.

laverendrye, you should explain to Americans and others who Jean Brault is.......LOL!
