yellowknife area - how bad are the bugs in june

i was considering a trip up north in june but several people have told me that the black flys and mosquitos are so bad that it will ruin my trip. taking some elderly people and don't want any infections or anything. any advice would be great.

I was there in July once and they werent so terrible. Dont get me wrong, there were lots of bugs, but it was nothing a good repellent couldn't handle. Depends on you tolerance level, I guess

After mid July you may need a baseball bat for self defense. When my dad was up there once he says the guys used them for target practice; just like shooting skeet.
No problem with infections at all-the tropics it ain't.

As mentioned some days are /better/worse than others.

The most effective repelent is available locally and if you're really concerned buy some 'head nets' for the Seniors.

I lived in Yellowknife/Fort Smith area for about 15 years. The bugs can be pretty bad but if you were to use bug spray or a head net you would be fine. I'm off to visit my mom in Yellowknife in July. As it was such a cold spring she thinks that the bugs won't be bad this year. And as for disease/infection, I've never heard of anyone catching anything and having worked in the bush for months at a time you'd figure if there was something I would have caught it. Yellowknife is a very unique city, don't let a few bugs deter you from what will be a very memorable trip.
