Winnipeg accommodation - any advice??

We're looking for some recommendations regarding accommodation in Winnipeg. We are considering hotels as well as B&Bs. What are some clean comfortable places to stay?? (a kitchen or kitchenette would be an asset but not absolutely necessary). Does anyone have any comments on the Louis Riel Suite Hotel??

. . . . hoping that there are some Manitoba bound Fodorites out there!! - my last question got no answers at all!!!. . . .

Hi! I live in Winnipeg. My cousin stayed in the Louis Riel about 18 years ago. I remember back then it was clean and comfortable. It is located in downtown Winnipeg, close to shops, restaurants, nightlife. Another nice hotel is the Hotel Fort Garry, also located downtown. One of the oldest hotels in Winnipeg, but don't worry it's not run down. Beautiful inside, but unfortunately I don't think there are kitchnettes. I will find out some more information and will defintitely post back some more information. I hope this helps!

Also live in Winnipeg
Hotel Fort Garry very nice - very short walk to "The Forks", train stations, river walk, baseball park and Legislative Buildings. Not so close to any shopping malls.

Would also recommend Clarion which has spa and is very close to parking, football stadium, theatre complex and a number of restaurants. also closer to airport but not enough to make much difference in selection.

Neither of these hotels have kitchenettes to my knowledge but Winnipeg has many, many restaurants that are reasonably priced. Strongly suggest a stroll along Corydon and Osborne Village if you like areas with some degree of character.
Enjoy your visit to our city.

Also agree with dj canada rec about the Clarion Hotel. Winnipeg does have a variety of restaurants that are reasonable in price. Here are a few websites to check out regarding hotels:

Clarion: www.choicehotels.com

Hotel Fort Garry: www.fortgarryhotel.com

Hope this helps!

Many thanks for the suggestions!!

Just for clarification - we are interested in a kitchen/kitchenette mainly because I do not like going out for breakfast. It takes too much time compared to making and eating breakfast "at home", with a kitchen I can eat in my nightie (or not :S-!!) if I want, room service breakfasts are usually overpriced plus the choices are limited, and the tea that they serve in most places (outside of Victoria) is absolutely dreadful!!!

We intend to eat most of our dinners out, so suggestions for interesting restaurants with exquisite food are welcome!! On another thread I read that Dubrovnik was highly recommended. Any others?? (our criteria is the food, food, food - it has to be well prepared and attractively presented, and must be delicious #o !!).

I, too, prefer apartment hotels, for much the same reason, and Place Louis Riel would be a fine choice. It's also in a great location, just down the street from the Forks, where you could do some sightseeing, shop, as well as pick up necessities for your kitchen at the market.

A few blocks away from P.L.R. is Dubrovnik, which you mentioned, and it is indeed a great place to go, great food, great service. Our personal favourite, though is Amici's, which is just a couple of blocks away from the hotel. Their website is at:

www.amiciwpg.com/

The formal dining room is upstairs, and downstairs is Bombolini, where you can dine in a more casual setting or order your meal for takeout.

Other great places to go are the Fusion Grill, on Academy Road, 529 Wellington, as well as Tavern in the Park.

Thanks Carolyn, I've noted your suggestions, and we'll be sure to try Dubrovnik, Amici and Fusion Grill.
