Which Montreal Hotel Would You Pick?
 

Hello,

A little advice please. After pouring over the comments about hotels in Montreal, I've narrowed my list to the following:

Sofitel
Le Meridian Versailles
Hotel Godin
Le Place d'Armes
Lowes Hotel Vogue
Le Germain

They all seem to fit my standard for upscale, clean, stylish, good service and good location.

So, if anyone has first-hand experience with one or more of this hotels, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

BTW, I'm traveling with my wife and young daughter in early May.

I just booked Hotel Nelligan...not on your list, but it gets great reviews!!

We stay @ Le Germain or Omni. Lowes Vogue is a bit tired. I do not know anything about your other 4 choices except that Sofitel is near Omni. I have been there but never stayed there so cannot comment. The lobby of Sofitel struck me as "cold". It felt very corporate. Like an office building.

I considered the Hotel Nelligan too but got the impression it was a little too quaint for my tastes. Wrong? The Omni looks like a nice place just a bit big. Interesting that you thought the lobby of the Sofitel looked cold and corporate, I sort of felt the same way about the rooms (based on the website photos, of course). Still, it gets rave reviews on TA.

Nelligan is a very nice place to stay. Just like Place d'Armes and le Germain. All three are beautiful boutique hotels, well situated.

Here's another that's not on your list.

Le Saint-Suplice is a boutique suite hotel in Old Montreal with a stylish, contemporary look and feel to it. We were very pleased with both our suite and the service during our stay there and it gets (almost) uniformly excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. I believe we had the 'deluxe' suite which I think was about 750 square feet and had a little balcony overlooking the courtyard in the back.
The location is excellent.

We were entertaining there a bit and I loved the special little touches like linen napkins in the 'kitchen', real wineglasses, etc. They also presented me with about half a dozen 'when in residence in Montreal' cards when I checked in -- that was the first time I'd had that done for me and it was quite a nice surprise.

There were only two of us so I don't know if the couch in the living room opened into a bed, but if so, that might be good for your daughter.

Thanks for additional info about Hotel Nelligan and Le Saint-Suplice. Actually, since I first wrote the post I revisted Le Saint-Suplice and was impressed. It's a bit pricier than the others but seems to offer larger rooms.

I don'tknow how long you'll be in Montreal but I think if you're traveling with a child it's nice to have the extra space and the kitchen facilities.

If you stay there, I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Saint-Suplice sounds really interesting. Where exactly is it located, hdm? If you stay there, output555, please post back w/ your review!

About Omni: Last time we had a 2BR Suite facing the mountain. It was beautiful @ night. Omni has a great pool which your daughter wld probably enjoy!

I find Le Germain is great for a couple but when travelling with kids we need more space(hence the move from Le Germain to Omni for our last trip to Montreal w/ kids.) At Le Germain we had a room w/ 2 double beds. The beds are really really close together. The "view" was looking directly into an office building! The bathroom is huge....just huge. I love Le Germain but one thing that we hated was their "trademark scent"....green apples....they have this scent wafting throughout the heating/air conditioning system. I found it overpowering. And, when we returned home our clothes smelled like green apples! Kind of sour....ugh! Apparently, a lot of Le Germain guests like it but we didn't. They even have green apples by the elevator....just sitting there on the table!
Anyway...let us know what you decide & have a great time in Montreal!

The best I can do is tell you it's on Rue Saint Sulpice. It's a few short blocks from the big central square in Old Montreal and about a five minute walk to there. One would easily say it's in the heart of Old Montreal. I think (but I'm not sure) that it's on the street perpendicular to the Hotel Nelligan (or maybe that's the Vieux Port). Your best bet would be to 'map it' on expedia or some other mapper.

I am staying at the St. Sulpice with friends in early May. My husband had stayed there previously on business, and told me that their suites are great, and yes, the bed opens up to a queen sofa in the deluxe suite.

The Nelligan is on st. paul, corner of st. sulpice street and the St. Sulpice is on st. sulpice street almost at the corner of st. paul; they are a stone's throw from one another.
Both amazing hotels; st. paul street is interesting, a fine row of galleries between st. laurent and st. sulpice, and from st. sulpice to mcgill, more galleries and shops, with more restaurants interspersed,
it's an area that the locals frequent.
East of st. laurent, going towards place jacques cartier, is more touristy.
One street down from st. paul is the waterfront, the old port area.

Also on St. Paul is my favourite lunch place Olive et Gourmando. Be sure to check it out when you go.

Le Square Phillips Hotel & Suites was recommended in the March 2006 Gourmet article about Montreal. It also gets very high reviews on trip advisor. A good friend who has stayed there several times really likes it. Another choice for a suite with more space for a family
It probably depends on where you like to be located. Old Montreal is very charming but touristy and Square Phillips is downtown

Vttraveller: I have been trying to find a website to give me the info in the March 2006 Montreal issue of Gourmet but have been unable to locate one. Do you know of such a site?

Over the years that we went to Montreal at least once, sometimes twice a year, we stayed at the Fours Seasons/Westin/Omni ( Jr Suite, high floor facing Mt Royal) .. whatever name it had, it was always a nice big room with a great view, clean and comfortable and great service..loved the Concierge. .. and Le Germain.
Since 2001, we only stayed at the Le Germain. wow- they always had the apples, but the scent thing must be new.
I will always recommend them, I never in all my stays there , had a bad time.
I was always interested in staying at the Sofitel, but when it came down to the decision, we went back to the Germain :)
I like the clean style with dark furniture and cushy furniture..the Sofitel has that sort of style too. But I don't know about those rooms being all window..

Sorry it took me a while to get back to this thread to answer your question. Unfortunately I don't know how to find an on-line version of the Gourmet article. I have saved the (hard) copy from when it came out. I am sure you can get back copies of Gourmet by contacting the magazine but this is probably expensive and might take some time. The Epicurius web says to call 800-365-2454

Gourmet's decision to feature Montreal was considered somewhat controversial since this was only the magazine's 6th single city issue and many people don't see Montreal as in the same class as the others (NY, Paris, Rome, San Francisco, London)

Thanks for the response. I am sorry to hijack this post, but I can't seem to post a new message-- my screen is cut off! Apparently a lot of Fodorites are experiencing the same thing, and Fodors has not fixed the problem yet.

So here goes hijack #2 for Montreal ( I sure hope that people are still reading this post): Spas in downtown for the girls and myself: Rainspa, Spa St. James, Spa Eastman or Spa Savanna? Anyone have any comments on these??

I have not tried those spas but heard good things about them; I go to Spa Diva in les Cours Mt Royal on Peel, they are open 7 days a week and nights also.
