I continue to search for desirable, yet affordable cabins to stay in while we are in the Banff/Lake Louise area. The ones that appeal the most (that are in our price range) are at the Kootenay Park Lodge, about 45 minutes away from both Banff and Lake Louise. Am I crazy to think that this could be our home base while we are in the area? Anything else I should consider? Thanks for all of the above comments!

You can also consider renting a suite in the nearby small town of Field. Field is enroute to Yoho, so it's a good base if you wish to be near both Lake Louise and Yoho to hike, etc. If, however, you would miss the more bustling environment of Banff, then you might not be happy there. Just a thought.
