Where to stay in Montreal
 

Hi,

My husband and I are planning to stay mid-week (mon and tues) in Montreal for the first time. We came across a nice looking hotel on the web, Auberge Bonaparte. Has anyone stayed there? If so, what are you opinions on the hotel, location, etc. Also, is the Old part of town a nice area to stay, or should we consider downtown, Plateau Mont-Royal or another area. We are in our twenties and would like a bustling nightlife to be nearby. Thanks!

I think you should type the name of the hotel into the text search box and read up on it..I know there are many posts on the Bonapart and Old Montreal.
My opinion, it is lovely and charming, both the hotel and the area.
But if you are young and want a nightlife also, I think you would be better off in the Plateau or Downtown, near Sherbrooke.

In my optinion, there are 3 areas of the city to consider for the first time visitor -
The 'Old City' - By far the most charming and photogenic area. Good for dining and nightlife, but a bit isolated from the rest of the city. Lots of touristy gift shops, and pricy restaurants. Not the best place to stay in the dead of winter.

The Downtown - Bustling, mid town Manhattan feeling area. Big stores, hotels, underground city, skyscrapers.

The Plateau - The most 'French' feeling area. Lots of small cafes, bistros,byob restaurants, shops, tree lined streets. Great area for wandering on a warm summer evening.

We almost always stay in the Plateau area, but that's just a matter of preferance.

Old Montreal is very charming, lovely to stroll around in, good restaurants, but if you want night-life, most of the clubs are around St Catherine Street and there are some places to stay around there.

It's not far from a metro station. You can get all over on the metro. Depending upon your dates (though I don't know about Mondays and Tuesdays), you may find appealing nightlife in Vieux Montreal to the east.

Otherwise, get off the metro at Sherbrooke and head northwest on St-Denis, or get off at Peel and head for Crescent between Sherbrooke and St-Catherine, and continue on St-Catherine if you like.

On Cresent, you'll find all sorts of possibilities - a Hard Rock, Thursday's (nightclub), etc.
