Where to stay and where to hike on Cape Breton Island

We want to explore the Cabot trail in late August / early September for about 4-5 days and can't decide whether to stay only around Cheticamp or only around Ingonish or or both or neither.
The Cape Breton Highlands Nat. Park website lists 25 trails en route, and they are clustered at either end.
Any suggestions as to where to stay and also any favorite trails? (not too steep and less than 6 miles, please.)
Thanks very much.

I recommend 2 days hiking in Cheticamp, 1 day whalewatching and touring in the area and last two days in Ingonish. If you come a little later you get to experience the Hike the Highlands Festival Sept. 10-19 - http://www.hikethehighlandsfestival.com

I recommend two nights in Cheticamp ( Ocean View Motel) , night in Cape North ( Oakwood Manor) and two nights in Ingonish - Glenghorm Beach Resort - also home to the Thirsty Hiker Pub with night entertainment). Enjoy

Hiking Trails - On Cheticamp Side recommend Skyline, and Le Chemin du Buttereau & le Buttereau and Salmon Pools - along the river no hills but 12.2 km and on Ingonish side - Middle Head, Warren Lake and Clyburn. Hope this helps.

We can either get to NS via ferry to Digby or drive directly from the mainland further north. Is there anything special en route from Digby to Cape Breton.
Thanks.
