Where to stay?

We are planning a family vacation to PEI and want to know the best part of PEI to stay. We love the beach, want to swim and bike on the Confederation Trail. We don't need shopping or theme parks but prefer more outdoor activities. It all seems to be nice but if we are renting a place for 1-2 weeks, we want to be in a good location. Thanks.

My favourite part of the Island is around Darnley and Sea View. (NW of Kensington) There are a number of good rental possibilities (e.g. http://www.peivacationrentals.com/elizabeth/index.html) and a fine campground (Twin Shores). The beaches are relatively uncrowded and stretch for kilometers. One can walk for hours. While the water is cool until well into July, the beaches allow for great swimming: shallow, warmer water between shore and sandbars. There are enough side roads to allow safe cycling, but if you are determined to try the Confederation Trail (not the most scenic cycling, IMO), you can catch it at nearby Kensington. The most scenic part of the Confederation Trail might be the section by St. Peter's Bay (NE of Charlottetown), which is close to a good beach at Greenwich. I'm not as familiar with rental possibilities there. Both those areas are free from the attractions that bless or curse Cavendish: mini-golf, T-shirt shops, and theme parks. Good luck with your planning.
