What to do in Whitehorse

I will be in Whitehorse for a few days and I am wondering what to do. My girlfriend and I are on a tight budget, but are willing to try anything. What's it like to camp?

Whitehorse itself is a city of around 20,000 which is pretty big for that part of the world. It's a place where backbackers and conoeists stop for a bit of an urban fix before, after or inbetween spending time in the magnificent outdoors surrounding the city.

Outdoor activities are obviously attractive and the wilderness is really just that. The total population of the Yukon is barely 30,000 with over 20,000 in Whitehorse and environs so you can imagine how unspoiled the rest of the place is. While the days are 20 hours or more in the summer the short nights can be cool and weather is very changeable. Camping is fine but there is wildlife, especially bears, which are dangerous so be careful where you leave your food. Thee are campgrounds around Whithorse as well as hostels. Food and other staples are about 25% more expensive than 'outside'. If you're driving the Highways are pretty good albeit two lanes only. The side roads off the main highways are a different matter however.

Whitehorse itself has a pretty frenetic nightlife for such a small town. There are bars with entertainment and dancing everywhere and even a few decent restaurants - but if you're on a tight budget you should do this only for a 'special' night.
