What's best place to cross border traveling from Chicago to Stratford? Port Huron or Detroit?
We're driving to Stratford, ON, soon, and Mapquest keeps routing us through Port Huron/Sarnia. I remember years ago going through Windsor. Is one route faster than the other... in terms of driving time, and in terms of how long it takes to get through border logistics? Thanks for your help.

Port Huron / Sarnia is the most convenient way to get to Stratford.
When we lived in St. Joe Michigan we would take I94 over to the Interstate that goes up toward Lansing then take it right across to Sarnia. Then take hwy 402 and follow Mapquest's directions. Much less congestion at Port Huron vs Detroit and a more direct route within Canada. Jerry |
I agree with Port Huron /Sarnia. The border crossing is less congested. The drive from Sarnia to Stratford would involve travel on the 402 whereas the Windsor to Stratford route is along the 401. The 402 is not as busy as the 401. You could also take highway 7 from Sarnia which is not as fast but much more interesting as it goes through small communities. Bluewater Bridge toll is $2 CDN or $1.50 US (don't mix currencies). If you have the exact change you can use the automated line.

No contest here. Port Huron is by far the better. Go along Hwy 402 for a short distance and go north a little way and come along #22 into London. You can find your way to Stratford from there.#22 is a quiet country road and is a pleasure to drive.

Definitely Sarnia/Port Huron.
And, please don't even consider crossing at Detroit on a holiday weekend! You will loose a good part of your life waiting on the Ambassador Bridge. For crossing at Port Huron, carefully watch your speed when you cross the border into Canada. I have always seen plenty of Canadian police cars parked along this stretch actively passing out tickets. - Sharon |
let me clarify... the police cars are along the road after you have crossed the bridge....

Thanks, everyone! Looks like there's 100% agreement on this. Port Huron/Sarnia it is.
