What is Canadian Law and seat belts?
What is the seatbelt law for children, one years old? How about in taxi cabs?

Traffic laws in Canada are a provincial matter so you will get a better answer if you let us know which province you are interested in. In Ontario an approved child seat is required and I don't know of any exception for taxis. Seat belt use is mandatory for everybody here (Ontario).

Quebec is the same as ontario, and no children under twelve, I think, in the front seat.

In Alberta, as in all Canadian provinces, seatbelt use is mandatory. All children must be in appropriate carriers.
In Alberta and the rest of Canada, seat belts are mandatory. Children under 40 pounds must be restrained in a child-booster seat. Infants must be restrained in a rear-facing infant safety seat. For babies, thebest bet is to have the kid in one of those ruggesd baby carriers that is designed to fit into a car, underneath the car's own seat belt, so that the baby faces bckwards.
That will solve the seat belt in taxi problem. But a one year old is getting pretty big for some of these easily-carryiable seats. Stay tuned here; I'm sure someone will actually ask a cab driver what the system is when little kids need a ride. There are some silly aspects of the law -- thinks like neighbors can't carry kids unless the kid comes with his own child seat, and so on. And, as mentioned above, laws vary by province. BAK |
