I need some help on deciding if any of the whale watching tours are worthwhile. Have three teenagers wanting to know if they are worth the money/time.

Best place to view orcas is during the summer in Johnstone Strait. Quite north of Victoria and Vancouver.

Our teenagers loved watching gray whales on the two tours we have done from the west coast (Ucluelet/Tofino). The gray whales migrate through there for only a limited time in late Spring, and to a lesser degree in late Fall.

We went on a Zodiac boat last year, with Remote Passages (remotepassages.com). A few years before that, we went with Seaside Adventures (seaside-adventures.com), which is a bigger company and uses larger boats. In both cases, we saw tons of whales sounding and rolling - we thought it was great.

Tofino has residen gray whales from March though to the end of October and sometimes later. The main migration is in March but you have great sitings right through to October. There are many companies both in Tofino and Ucluelet and the main decision would be what type of boat you want to go on. Teens would probably love a zodiak! They would undoubtedly like the trip for the experience even if they didn't see whales! All the tour operators are responsible and safe - they work together as well so there are no better sightings with one company over another.
