Whale Watching
 

Hello Fellow Travelers:
I'm inquiring about the best location to go Whale Watching 29th-August 3rd in Antigonish (out of Cape Brenton or Antiqonish, Pictou) or out of Bay of Fundy or Atlantic(Aug 3-9th). We're looking for the best possible sightings of the Whales. Any insight would be appreciated...Names of excursions, etc.

I'm heading to the area with my family in a couple of weeks. Whale watching is a definite for us, too. So, I've done quite a bit of research, both from this forum as well as other places. It seems that the best place for the greatest variety of whales is the Bay of Fundy, which is like a huge smorgasboard for leviathon. On NS, the Digby area has a few whale watching excursions. Frommer's book says they're all pretty much the same and all good. We've decided to take our tour out of Digby. Perhaps other readers have other thoughts. Have fun!!

Pleasant Bay in Cape Breton is a good spot. Wesley will take you out in a zodiac so you are at the same level as the whales.

We had minke whales come right into Halifax Harbour this week. You can take a whale watching tour out of here as well - Murphy's on the Water at Historic Properties.

Getting a little more confused...LOL!
I do understand there is great Whale Watching in Cape Breton and out of Digby. Also, just noticing out of Halifax as well. But, I guess I'm looking for the most variety of Whales. I did hear via grapevine that Bay of Fundy has that, not sure if true! I'd really like to do something out of Digby...not Westport or Tiverton. Or out of Cheticamp I think (not Ingonish or Pleasant Bay for travel time mostly), possible Halifax. I don't want to be disappointed. I live on the water in NE: RI and have never gone in RI or MA because I don't think it is all it's cracked up to be down here. So I am a little excited about doing it in NS and possible expectations are high! LOL!

Ryan: I fully understand. A few years ago I took my family out to see whales from Bar Harbor, but didn't see any, although some of the passengers spotted a whale shark. We got our money back, but were disappointed. We went to Vancouver Island last year and got up close to a pod of orcas - really exciting for parents and kids alike. I'm still convinced that the Digby area excursions are the way to go to see the greatest variety. As for money back guarantees, for most whale watch operations, if one whale is spotted no matter how brief a glimpse or how far off, the guarantee is satisfied and no money will be returned. So, it's Digby for me unless someone who'se very knwoledgeable convinces me otherwise. A thought: Why not call one or more of the Digby-area operatives and ask what variety of whales are usually spotted. I'm sure they'd be helpful.

Okay...now I'm going to ask another question. I'm thinking morning might be the best time to see Whales as they might be feeding or early evening. Anyone who has been on a Whale Cruise have any informative insight on this subject from experience on a Cruise in NS?

Dear Ryan Your best bet for seeing whales would be the first trip of the day usually somewhere around 10 am. Hope this helps
