Weekend trips from Halifax
It looks as though I'm going to be working Halifax for a few weeks this summer. Rather than flying home to Toronto each weekend, I thought my husband could join me one weekend instead. We actually spent a couple of weeks in Nova Scotia and NB last September, but never got to Cape Breton or PEI, 2 places everyone told us we 'must' visit. If I'm staying in Halifax, would either of those places be realistic weekend trips? We loved Lunenburg, Chester, etc., also spent a night or 2 in Wolfville and Digby, so ideally would like to see something new.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. |
Louisbourg (fort recontruction) is very nice, Baddeck (on the lake, go to Bell Museum) stop at Rita O'Neills teahouse
on the east side of the lake. Cape Breton Highland Park is probably worth it but I haven't been since I was a kid. PEI is small and easy to get around once you get there. Ferry from NS requires a line up and reservations. Charlottetown is worth the time. Golfing is great. Probably not so many Japanese this year but they usually go to Ann of Green Gables site. (Cavendish) Don Harron (CBC fame) and his wife have a play house there. |
Dear Susan If you didn't get to Cape Breton Island last time you missed alot. Might I suggest if you come down its best for you to stay in baddeck, if you choose to see the Cabot Trail & also the Fortress of Louisbourg. From Baddeck the Trail is a 8 hr drive of some of the most Breathtaking scenery the world has to offer, Louisbourg from Baddeck is 1 hr to 1hr 20 min drive but well worth it. Louisbourg is a French fortress in the time peroid of 1713 when the french were powerful & its a must see allow 5 hrs. for this. If Louisbourg doesn't strike your fancy maybe The Cape Breton Miners' Museum will. Its located on Birkley Street in Glace Bay and gives you an up front look of what it was like to work in a coal mine, as well as life stories. These are only a very few things Cape Breton has to offer, Check us out you'll be glad you did...

If you only have a two day weekend, I would suggest heading to Cape Breton on Friday night. Take all day Saturday to do the Cabot Trail, spend the night (Baddeck is a great village) and then take Sunday to drive back to Halifax. Louisbourg in itself is a full day (and a great one at that)!

Thanks for the advice, but now plans have been changed - I'll have 2 short (3 day) weeks in St. John, NB, then 3 weeks in Montreal. Unfortunately the 2 weeks that I'm in NB aren't good weeks for my husband to join me. I'm so disappointed! Montreal is ok, but it's a place I travel to fairly often on business, so I was really looking forward to something different. Oh well, I guess I'll keep these ideas for another time in the future.
