I am going to Victoria in October - I am torn between reservations at Ocean Point Resort and The Empress (water view at OPR and city view at the Empress) - Since I have never been to Victoria I have no idea which to choose - Help!! Maggie

Maggie, this may confuse you even more, but I think you should also take a look at the Laurel Point Inn and the Magnolia, which are my favorite hotels in Victoria (as opposed to B&Bs). The south wing junior suites at the Laurel Point are spacious, beautiful rooms with water views, and its location (in a parklike setting right on the water, a 10 minute walk from the center of downtown) is fantastic. The Magnolia is a new boutique hotel next to the Empress that has been getting raves from everyone who has stayed there...gorgeous rooms and fantastic service.

I like the facilities at the OPR and the views, but the rooms are really nothing special...I found them to be a disappointment after the spectacular lobby. And the Empress is just too big for my tastes. I was SO disappointed in the service there, but I think it's just a function of the hotel's size--it's just too big to provide the level of personal attention that a hotel of its caliber (and prices!) should offer. If you DO stay there, do it right and splurge for one of their Entree Gold (concierge level) rooms--that way you'll at least get good service.

Sheri,

Thanks for the info - I made reservations at both Laurel Point and Magnolia - now I will have to decide between the two - it is our anniversary - so I am looking for the most romantic of the two. Maggie

Did you reserve a south wing jr suite at the Laurel Pt? If so, then that's what I would go with for a romantic weekend. The bathrooms in those suites are really nice, as an added bonus ;-).

Of the two I would also choose Laurel Point.

Sheri is right about the service at the Empress not always being so swift.

Thanks for all the comments - we did choose the Laurel Point Inn and did get a South Wing Junior Suite. Will post a followup after our visit. Maggie
