14 days self-drive Niagara north
We are Australians visiting Canada for the first time in Sep/Oct 2016. We have 14 days to self-drive north from Niagara Falls. We have to be in Montreal by a specific date and will spend 2 nights and 3 days there before flying back to Vancouver to catch our international flight home. We would like to get as far as Quebec at least, possibly even to Prince Edward Island, but we want to fit in as much as we can in the 14 days. We have no plans or ideas as yet for our 'road trip' and are seeking suggestions as to places that are 'must sees' and things to do on our journey. We are both fit and healthy and there will only be us - no kids! We will have had 3 days in Toronto before Niagara Falls, so we don't need to go there again on our 'road trip'. I'd appreciate suggestions as to places to see, routes to take, places to stay etc.

Plan a few days exploring the Niagara Wine Region while visiting Niagara Falls... There are over 100 wineries as well as the village of Niagara on the Lake...
The Shaw Festival may also have some performances that interest you while in the Village... That is a great time of year to visit the vineyards...

Fourteen days gives you time to get to the east coast and possibly PEI, as long as you don’t mind lots of driving. It is a lovely time of year to travel as well. Tell us your interests and we will be more able to advise you on specifics. Are you flying to Vancouver from Toronto?

Thanks eliztravels2, we are flying to Vancouver from Montreal in mid-Oct. As far as interests go, I'd love to see PEI - Anne of Green Gables and all that; we both enjoy seeing history and nature, we love food and we enjoy walking where ever we are; we hope to see nature at its most spectacular on this trip to Canada.

I'm assuming that your 14 days includes your time in Montreal. Here's a possible itinerary:
Niagara Falls to Ottawa, either via Algonquin Park, which will be very scenic at that time of year, or Kingston which will be faster. If you go via Kingston, leave Highway 401 there and head to Ottawa by Hwy 15 through the Rideau Lakes, or leave at Gananoque and follow the 1000 Islands Parkway right along the river.
Spend two nights and a day in Ottawa, and then drive to Québec City. Two or three nights in Québec City. Then on to PEI stopping overnight in Fredericton NB.
From Fredericton to PEI and stay 3 or 4 nights. Return to Montréal, stopping overnight near Rivière du Loup. My favourite for an over-night stop would be Kamouraska. Depending on how long you have spent in Québec City and PEI you will have a minimum of 2 nights in Montréal
You could vary this itinerary by taking the north shore from Québec City through the Charlevoix region, crossing by ferry from St. Siméon to Riviere du Loup and stopping there for the night before heading directly to PEI. It's very scenic, especially the road along the shore from Baie St. Paul to La Malbaie.
It's a lot of driving, but certainly do-able and allows you some time to enjoy PEI.
