While late May might be one of the better months for whales off the West Coast of Vancouver Island, it is far from ideal. Both Grey and humpback whales are migrating northward in fairly large numbers, but they are considerably far from shore and large seas can deter travel to them. Transient, resident and offshore killer whales are seen but not frequently, as they are usually travelling and sightings are not at all predictable. In 2023, more than 400 humpback whales and over 1400 individual killer whales were documented in the waters off the island’s Southeast Coast, making Victoria, Nanaimo, Campbell River and even Vancouver, the better choices for whale watching. May in Tofino and Ucluelet are great for black bears though. |
