Vancouver Transit Strike
 

I will be flying into Vancouver 6/16, if there is a transit strike, does that means cabs/shuttles will NOT take people from the airport? I would assume the Vancouver Trolley is privately owned for transportation for us 'tourists' once we do make it to our hotels. Thanks.

Jody, The cabs, limos, and shuttles from the airport are still operating as usual. Only the public transit buses are on strike.

There are taxi's and limo's and the "Airporter", the public bus that shuttles tourists from the airport to downtown is still operating. <BR> <BR>All other public transportation is not running, you'll be walking lots! <BR>If you are interested in tourist tours around the city, check out www.vancouver.com, you can make reservations for tours ahead of time. <BR>Vanocuver is a busy city in the summer and if the buses are still on strike it may be worth your while to make reservations for some of the tours. <BR> <BR>

What's the word on the operation of ferries--are they on strike too?

April is wrong, the ferries were still on strike when I was there (May 24)

Vincent's probably talking about the Seabus - the little passenger boat that goes back and forth from downtown Vancouver to North Vancouver's Lonsdale Quay. <BR> <BR>For those who don't know what the seabus is, think of it as as just that - a bus, except it travels over water. You can hop on and off the bus, the skytrain, and the seabus with a bus ticket/pass, unlike BC Ferries. BC Ferries are completely different. <BR> <BR>Also, the BC Ferries are manditory services, aren't they? If they aren't running, no one is getting on or off the local islands, nothing can be transported there unless by air... and people would be stranded. It would be rather cruel really. ;)

Robyn, <BR>The BC ferries are not a mandatory service, although they should be! They do go on strike now and then.

David, What you want is not 'public transit' but a privately owned bus company called Pacific Coach Lines. When you clear customs exit the closest doors and look for a silver greyhound bus with an orange stripe. If it isn't there find the booth with the shedule. Just over $30 includes the ferry fee. Drops you just behind the Empress hotel in Victoria.

I suppose I should make it more clear for everyone: <BR> <BR>In Vancouver when we say that "public transit" is on strike, we're really talking about "publically funded by the city" transit (ie: the city buses). <BR> <BR>Because the local Vancouver public doesn't fund the taxis, limos, private shuttles bus companies, the aquabus company, etc - of course, they're still running. :) <BR> <BR>Hope this clears us some confusion!
