vancouver island travel info

Is there any other way to travel from Victoria to Tofino/Long Beach other than by car without excessive cost?

Absolutely. You can take the bus. Look up http://tofinobus.com and you can also take Laidlaw's bus transport. Don't have the web site for that. If you do take the bus ensure you pick an accommodation in town so that you can easily walk to restaurants, etc.
BTW, Tofino Bus also operates a shuttle to the National Park.

Yes...there are buses that will get you to Tofino.

You can also go by air, but it is a bit more pricey (North Vancouver Air operates between Victoria and Tofino for $149 CDN each way).

Mind you, considering the price of gas these days, it might me just as reasonable to go by air.

Having said that, if it is at all possible for you to go by car, the drive from Victoria to Tofino is spectacular, and there are lots of things to see and places to stop along the way. Some of the pristine lakes and forest area's can only be seen when travelling by bus or car.

Once there, I think it would be difficult to get around to see much without a car.

There is a bus that runs between Tofino and Ucluelet and stops at all the major beaches and and points in the National Park so a car is not really a necessity in Tofino. As long as you stay in town you can walk to all the tour offices for whale watching, kayaking, etc. etc. and to very good restaurants and Tonquin Beach. If you come from Vancouver and not Victoria the Tofino Bus has worked out a deal with the fast passenger ferry from DT Vancouver to DT Nanaimo for $55 one way including ferry and the TofinoBus to Tofino. It's faster than the regular ferry and it's a greeat price!

There is one other possibility. The E&N Railway (I think the ViaRail website would have some info on it, or you can search under "Vancouver Island railroad" - let me know if you can't find anything, because I just did but I can't remember where ) is a delightful little train that travels up and down the east coast of Vancouver Island. You get a much more scenic trip than the bus would give you. However, it doesn't go to Tofino. You could catch a bus from Nanaimo or Port Alberni, though, which would get you to Tofino. It would take some coordinating because I think there's only one bus daily. That train is less expensive than the bus and it's an absolutely beautiful trip, if you're able to work out the details.
