Vancouver Island RV Trip
We are planning an RV trip to Vancouver island with our 12 year old son (2 weeks or so next July / August).
Who can give advice on such a trip? What are the must visit places? Are the Gulf Islands RV-able - or are ferries either too small or prohibitively expensive? All advice welcome |
Hello "Cochrag",
I am a resident of Lower Vancouver Island snd a long time RV owner so I can probably steer you towards a memorable visit!! As you are planning a visit next summer we can get you an unforgettable experience complete with reservations in all the right places!! What I need to help you at this point is an idea of your landing point, ie where you are accessing Vancouver Island from, and I will go from there....... Cheers Amy |
Thanks for the interest. We're from Scotland and will be flying into Vancouver for 17 days in total but will probably also want to spend a few days with friends in Vancouver. At present the idea is to spend maybe 7 days in the RV on the island + a few more days in self catering (or maybe B&B type accommodation)
We've been to Victoria once beforeand liked it but we'd also like to explore some of the wilder parts of the island Any ideas about an itinerary that would be welcome. |
Hi Cochrag,
I haven't forgotten about you but have been distracted with family committments..........I will post shortly some ideas for your RV visit to Vancouver Island. Cheers, amygirl |
i'd plan on at least 3 nights in the tofino/ucluetets area and if you want more "wilder" parts of the island, go up north.

Thanks to Amygirl for your interest. I look forward to hearing your (and anyone elses) ideas

Was at a dinner party last night and one couple had rented an RV on Vancouver Island. They obviously loved everything but did say they would not recommend driving any vehicle to the high point on Salt Spring Island,. They said the road was awful with many potholes and steep drop offs and once you start that you have no choice. NOT recommended for an RV.

Just a note that the ferry is significantly more expensive with an RV, because it is both wider, longer, and taller than a normal car, and so can't go in the double-deck sections. RVs and trucks take the ferries all the time, but I'd guess you might be about 3x the car rate with a typical RV. I don't remember the web site, but a search on "BC Ferry" should get you there.

I was hoping to learn a little more about the RV possibilities in Vancouver Island. Input so far is very useful but does anyone else have input?
