Vancouver Hotel/Motel
I need a recommendation and cannot locate anything on point in previous posts.
I will be arriving in Vancouver late morning on a Saturday in October and departing for Toronto the next afternoon. Both arrival and departure will be at the AMTRAK/ViaRail train station. Does anyone have a suggestion for a quiet, clean hotel/motel that won't involve me schlepping my baggage all over Vancouver?

The train station area itself is a little scummy but less than a kilometre away are a whole host of hotels in the Yaletown area. They would mostly be in the moderate range and run at least $150-200CDN.
However if you're looking for something much less than that there are a few motels about a kilometre north on Main in an area that used to be pretty run down but now has become more 'gentrified'. The City Centre Moter Hotel, (www.citycentremotorhotel.com) would probably be the least expensive - about $75 - but the Biltmore Hotel is more of a full facility hotel, (www.biltmorehotelvancouver.com), though it's possibly a few bucks more.

Even though the area on Main is getting better, I still would not stay there!! I've driven by and seen lots of unsavory looking people around that area. And since you'll have a few hours to spend in Vancouver try to stay in a nicer location, even if it involves a cab ride to the train station.
The Sandman (around $120 Cdn), Hampton Inn (around $190 Cdn) and the Georgian Court (around $180 Cdn) are fairly close to the train and also close to Yaletown. They would be much nicer choices, still in the "reasonable" range for the downtown area.

I wouldn't stay by the train station. The train station is close to a "skytrain" station- A rapid transit overhead rail system. You could be downtown in a matter of minutes. You could also take a taxi- probably about $10 Can.($7.50 U.S.)to downtown/yaletown area
