Vancouver area in November
We're planning a 9 day trip to Vancouver, Victoria, and Vancouver Island the beginning of November. We'd love some advice about weather, visibility due to weather, and things to do while visiting that time of the year. Also, would it be feasible to visit the Banff/Jasper area and if so, what would be the best way to get there? Thanks, Mary.

I think of November as when the leaves blow off the trees, so expect some wind and rain. You could watch the salmon run at Goldstream Park outside of Victoria or see the Circus Magicus exhibit (whatever it is) at the provincial museum. Have tea at the Empress. It should be cheaper than in summer.

Be aware that ferries between the mainland and island are sometimes cancelled due to wind but it usually doesn't keep them out all day. There has already been snow on higher elevation highways in British Columbia so you would need to be prepared for this if you drive to Banff.

Mary I think you should seriously reconsider.
November is a 'month of misey' here, when the night lengthen and the rain starts to reign.
Have you ever been in a place where you don't see the sun for 3 WEEKS?
Come to our neck 'o the woods and try it!
Other posters will try to sugar coat the experience, believe it's misery incarnate, avoid at all costs.

Carl is right about the weather. The chances are pretty good that it will be rainy and chilly. Not seeing the sun for 3 weeks or more is not an exageration.

You must be talking about Vancouver? I think Victoria is not so bad.

Since it takes two days in each direction to drive to Banff from Vancouver, with only nine days, I wouldn't think it would be worth the time and effort to get there.

If the weather is bad, Tofino (on Vancouver Island's west coast) is a great place to be for storm watching. I love it over there in the winter. It's wonderful to bundle up and go walk on the beach, watching the storms come in across the Pacific, then get back to your room and dry off (get a room that has a fireplace!).
