Vancouver and other places in August
We are thinking of taking our 3 children who will then be 11, 11 and 14 to Vancouver in August 2015 from the uk. We would probably stay for 2-3 weeks. What do you recommend? Can you go whale watching /swimming with dolphins anywhere near there? What can we do which will please the girls and us? Been to Toronto, montreal before and Banff for skiing.

Whale watching, certainly. There are plenty of options - go to HelloBC's website and you'll find a wealth of information.

Swimming with dolphins - no, as far as I have ever heard; wrong place for it.

Vancouver has wonderful beaches just off the centre of the city. The water, however, is frigid. Your children are old enough to appreciate the wonderful First Nations' artifacts and artwork at the University of British Columbia's Museum of Archaeology http://www.moa.ubc.ca/ The swaying suspense bridge at Capilano has been delighting kids for at least a half-century http://www.vancouverkiosk.ca/vancouv...-Bridge.phphas
The city's aquarium is famous. http://www.vanaqua.org/
Granville Island, an old industrial area just off downtown, has become a centre for arts and crafts with an amazing seafood market and one of the country's eaarliest microbrew pubs. http://granvilleisland.com/
All of this and lots more is described on the city's tourism sites, always the first places to look up when planning a visit to a new destination.

In August The Fair at the PNE takes place. (Last 2 weeks of August) Rides, food, musical bands, shows, entertainment, shopping etc etc!! I work there every year at the "super dogs show". It's held in East Vancouver - and I'm sure you're girls would have a blast there.

Note weekends can be quite busy - so try for a week day if you can.

Commercial drive is fantastic for food & cafe's & shopping. Also located in East Vancouver.

"Frequently described as Vancouver's Greenwich Village, or as creative and bohemian as Paris' Rive Gauche, Commercial Drive has experienced a resurgence of interest in restoring its heritage commercial and residential buildings."

Here's an article with some highlights for a family trip:

In Vancouver, you can also check out the Westins, The Fairmonts and especially the Listel and the Times Square Suites.
