Upcoming trip to Newfoundland / itinerary question

Hi there-

We are planning a trip up the Northern peninsula in mid-late July. We are driving from north of Boston, taking the ferry to Port aux Basques. The main point of our trip is to visit Port Aux Choix, where my great grandmother was born, and to meet distant cousins, and we plan to drive all the way up to L'Anse aux Meadows as well. Is there time for a side trip to the Gander/Twillingate area if our entire trip is 2 weeks long? What spots between there and Deer Lake are worthy stops?

Thanks in advance for any direction here. We don't mind long drives, but I want to be realistic in my planning.

If you have two weeks on the island, then you will have time to visit the Twillingate area. While there, I would try to spend a couple of nights on Fogo Island.

If, however, your two weeks includes the drive to and from Boston and the ferry crossings, then you should stick to the west coast. There will be plenty to see in Gros Morne Park and the Northern Peninsula.

I don't think that there is anything really worth a detour between Deer Lake and the Gander/Twillingate area. At least in a number of trips I have not found any.

Thanks for the feedback! Very helpful. The more I look, the more I think we can fit in both. Any recommendations on places to stay at Fogo or Twillingate?

Cheers,

Krsiten

On Fogo Island I would certainly recommend the Quintal House in Joe Batt's Arm where I stayed two years ago.

I've been to Twillingate three times and have twice stayed at the Harbour Lights and once at the Hillside B&B. They're both fine.

Sorry for the delay in reply, but I've been travelling.

if you are up northern peninsula, drop by the tablelands as well. great hikes, some easy, some challenging ones. apparently tons of icebergs up in St anthony now as well.
