Ucluelet or Tofino?

Spending 2 nights in this area....wondering where to stay? Thinking about the Black Rock Hotel Resort. Is it worth the money? If we stayed we would want an ocean view room.

i prefer the beach area just to the south of tofino--lots of great places to stay and closer to a better selection of restaurants than you would be down in Ucluelet. i haven't been to the black rock however so can't comment on it specifically.

Black Rock is great. Beautiful views and very modern hotel, quite different for the area which usually has west coast style buildings. It took me a while to like it, but now I am okay with the modern look. The location is spectacular and the resteraunt is great too.

It really depends on the type of vacation that you want. Tofino is beaches and touristy little town, and Ucluelet is rugged black rock with waves crashing in and forest walk with a less touristy town. I love both but it is all about what you are looking for

Tofino certainly has more to offer than Ucluelet: the beaches, the hot springs, the surf culture, more options in tour operators and definitely more restaurants. In the summer months Ucluelet is just as booked (and just as 'touristy'), and in the off season there is more to do in Tofino.

I am sorry but I have to disagree 'Tofino', Ucluelet does not have nearly the tourists that Tofino does IMO. There certainly are more resteraunts in Tofino, but there is a good choice in Ucluelet and the prices are lower.

There certainly is more to do in Tofino in the off season, you are right there, as a lot of resteraunts and shops close down in the winter, but the trails and hiking areas are still open.

As I said above it is an individual choice as to what people like to do. Some prefer the wild side and others the beach side.

It totally depends on what you want. My husband and I just returned from a fabulous tour of Vancouver Island. If your idea of good dining is to go to Fishfull Thinking just off Penninsula Road in Ucluelet and pick up freshly caught crab and prawns and take them back to your ocean view room, boil them until done, add lemon and butter and a side of fresh green beans and a bottle of white wine, then Ucluelet will fit the bill. We had a fabulous time. Great Zodiac whale watching through Jamie's Whale Watching with whales lunging and breeching and masses of sea lions. CopperstoneInn, a new self catering B ( no other B) had wonderful accommodations and a divine view. Whales spouting out in the ocean while we dined. We preferred the slower pace of Ucluelet.

i hope no one gets the impression from these posts that tofino is a big or busy place--that's SO not the case. busier that ucluelet, sure, but not big or crowded.

Yes I hope that no one gets that impression either, it is not what I intended for sure. I love both places, they are just quite different .
