Trip to PEI and Cape Breton

We've decided to do a road trip to PEI and Cape Breton for our summer vacation. We'll probably have the first 2 weeks of September. A few years ago, we drove from Toronto via Quebec City to NB (Fredericton & Hopewell Rocks) and Nova Scotia (Halifax, Lunenburg & Digby). Route home was through NB (overnight in St. Andrews), then to Bangor, Maine overnight, then back up to Quebec, where we spent a weekend in the Eastern Townships.

We didn't get to Cape Breton, nor did we go to PEI. This time, we'd like to get to both. We tend to like to spend 2 or 3 nights in a place, rather than being on teh move all the time. I'm considering going one way through through the States (maybe taking the CAT ferry from or to Portland or Bar Harbor) but I'm wondering about an interesting route for the other direction.

Any ideas?

I know that weather in Cape Breton is iffy. Would we be advised to go there first (before PEI)? Or is it likely to make any difference?

We want to keep our expenses down somewhat on this trip (originally planned to go to Portugal until I looked at my budget) so any recommendations for moderate priced accommodation would be appreciated.

Thanks!

so, i interprete that you will be driving up from the states. the CAT is a good way to get to nova scotia but it is very expensive.
assuming you drive up, i would drive through new brunswick and take the confederation bridge over to pei. enjoy the beaches the early part of september. i think about 5 days would be great. then, take the ferry from pei over to nova scotia. it arrives close to pictou which is a really lovely town. from there, head towards cape breton. consider staying in inverness the first night http://www.macleods.com/
or onto cheticamp but i personally didn't like that town.
take your time the next day and drive the cabot trail. stay somewhere along the way or at igonish. this is close enough that you can then back track the next day to do some hiking or see some spots along the trail that you want to return to. it really is beautiful so you won't mind doing some back tracking.
a couple of nights in baddeck and then homeward bound.

Thanks for the reply. We don't necessarily have to come up from the states - I was just thinking that we'd like to travel from Toronto 1 way and come back another way. We'll probably stop somewhere along the way.

The Cat does seem expensive though - I'm open to other routes.

Thanks again.

Hi, P.E.I. is beautiful as is the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton - both are worth a trip. Weather should be fine in early September, hopefully still warm enough to enjoy the beaches for swimming.

September is considered a 'shoulder season' on the Island and many cottages, b&b's and smaller inns and motels have greatly reduced prices. I'm afraid I have no suggestions re: Cape Breton but I'm sure others here will.

http://www.gov.pe.ca/visitorsguide/ is a good site to explore regarding accomodation. I hope you have a wonderful vacation.
