Trip to Alberta on Air Canada
 

This is the first time we've flown Air Canada. Does anyone know how particular they are about carryon luggage? I've read their website, but her's the situation. I have my carryon (which is standard size carryon) and I also have a camera bag (which is about the size of a large woman's purse). Will Air Canada hassle me about the camera bag? (I know some airline STRICTLY adhere to a oner carryon per person.) <BR>Thanks.

No they won't hassle you. I fly them quite a lot and don't find them to be too bad. However, I would check a day in advance and find out how full the flight is. They might be more strict if it is a very full international flight. I have often flown with them bring on 2 pieces.

Hmmm, I've never had Air Canada or any airline not allow me to take my camera bag. I have a purse with me as well.

Well, April, I've had a couple on bad experiences. Lately, I've had trouble with Delta (international flight) and AirTran (flight from Florida to Georgia.) I had a completely legit carryon piece, approx 40" and my Domke camera bag (which, admittedly, is heavy but is no more bigger than a large woman's purse.) Anyway, both flights were full and cramped and the flight crew seemed to be a trifle surly anyway. On both flights, the overhead bins for some reason were chockful of large and cumbersome luggage, baskets, clothes, lamps etc. So, I was given a choice as to what to check: my carryon or the camera bag, although all of the women on the flight were allowed to keep their purses AND their carryon. Go figure.

There you go - I've never flown Delta or AirTran. It doesn't seem fair though. By the way, which did you keep with you, the camera or the carry-on? Is there any way you can leave space in your carry-on to stuff in your camera and lenses in a pinch?

April, I kept the camera bag with me. What gets me (and I'm not being sexist) but why do women get to keep their purses AND their carryons, yet when they see a man with what looks like two bags, then it's time to check one of 'em. Anyway, I guess those who carry cameras and gear need to be ready to deal with the issue of carryon allowance. That's why I always try and chek first. It also helps to get to the airport early and get on the plane as soon as you can.
