Travel in October
 

We have planned a fall driving tour the first two weeks of October in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. (We will fly to and from Boston from the midwest and then drive from there.) What is the weather like up there at that time of year? We won't be hiking, just sightseeing and I'm trying to plan what clothing to take. Anybody familiar with that area in October?

I've travelled in the Maritimes in late September. Halifax in October has an average high of 55F and low of 39F and 5 inches of rain.

A layered approach to clothing with a knit pullover, fleece jacket and windproof/waterproof shell would be appropriate clothing.

The Bed and Breakfasts are typically closed by the end of September.

Favourite places were Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and Halifax in Nova Scotia and Malpaque Bay in PEI.

When I was in PEI last summer, I read a newspaper artcile lamenting how many places close by early September when most tourists are gone. Obviously, the major hotels are still operating, but many B&B's and restaurants which cater to the tourist trade close. Like the other responder suggests, layered clothing will go a long way for your comfort. I'm sure the Maritimes are gorgeous in the Fall. I want to return at this time of year after my kids leave the nest.

You've picked a great time of the year to come to Nova Scotia. While the average temperature is in the mid-50s, you'll encounter many days of warm sunshine, and there is an incredible quality to the light. There will be mauzy days--a Newfoundland term for warm, damp, and foggy weather. If you can find accommodation with a woodstove or fireplace, you'll really appreciate the cool nights.

During the first two weeks of October you can expect to find the autumn foliage at its best. HogtownJim's advice to bring layers, including some waterproof ones, is spot on.

Any changes in this advice for a little later in the month? I'll be crossing Canada by train from Vancouver to Montreal with side trips to Ottowa and Quebec City beginning Oct 23 and departing Montreal on Nov 1.

I too am traveling to Nova Scotia arriving in Yarmouth on October 11th. It has just been brought to my attention that the 11th is Thanksgiving Day! We have reservations to stay the night in Halifax. Will anything be open between Yarmouth and Halifax on that day? We are really looking forward to this trip and want to make the most of every minute.
