Toronto trip
Going to Toronto for 3 days in late June. Looking for some restaurants to go to.

sorry - should have added more info. We are staying in the downtown area at the Le Royal merdien King edward hotel on King St. Food ideas > looking for good Italian, or anything else except mexican and chinese. Mid-range pricing.

For Italian, try La Fenice.
Stay away from Le Betolla di Terroni on Victoria which is just up the street from your hotel. We were there recently & it was terrible. I asked for Parmesan for my lobster pasta & the server told me it was "forbidden". She wld not give me Parmesan & said that if I had wanted Parm I shd have ordered another pasta! ( not seafood pasta). Can you belive that? We also like Le Select Bistro. You cld go there for your "dinner type breakfast" (Brunch). Or, dinner. Le Papillon on Front is also good & just down the street from the King Eddy. Google each for menus & location. Enjoy Toronto! You said you wld be there "end of June". Will you still be there Friday, July 1 which is a holiday? When are you arriving? Tomorrow, June 28? |

I can't believe you had that experience! That's so funny! A few years ago, we were walking by the Terroni on Queen Street and popped in for lunch. Now, this is not a fancy place -- it's basically a dumpy lunch counter with pretensions. My SO ordered some kind of proscuitto sandwich and asked for mustard. He was told no, 'the chef' (read: the guy making a sandwich) wouldn't put mustard on the sandwich. My SO suggested some pasta sauce. No. Oh please...it's a friggin' ham sandwich! My SO told the sandwich guy to get over himself and we left. I've never been to a Terroni since. Toronto is chock full of great restaurants and I won't go out of my way to spend money at a restaurant where they forget I'm the customer. I agree -- avoid any Terroni at all costs! |
gtg, your story is "so Terroni". Just out of curiosity, what did they suggest for that ham sandwich?
How on earth do they manage to stay in business? |
I'm sure the sandwich guy felt that the mere touch of his talented fingers was all it needed.
Re your lobster pasta story, I understand that it's not usual for there to be cheese on seafood pasta but in our favourite Italian restaurant, they know my SO likes it so they bring some grated cheese to the table for him. Gee, they're really interested in keeping HIM happy instead of the chef -- amazing, isn't it? To garysir, on King, between John and Duncan, is a nice strip of restaurants. (I believe that's where Le Fenice is.) We like Fred's Not Here. Good, if you're meatetarians like us. For breakfast, I believe there's a Cora's around there as well. Or you could walk up to Fran's on Shuter, across from Massey Hall. |
If you are foodies, (and even if you are not,) be sure to check out the St Lawrence Market a couple of blocks to the east of your hotel. There are lots of vendors where you can pick up something delicious for lunch. You could also get it to go and walk a block north to a lovely park on King St between Church and Jarvis.
