Toronto locals- a couple questions semi-urgent.

So, this trip didn't start out too lucky. I had a 4-day pre-trip to visit family in Chicago and I had packed in a way that I could wash all that clothes before leaving Chicago. Alas, my sister's washing machine was broken and I didn't get my stuff washed.

The hotel I am at does not have an in-house laundromat (is that only US hotels?), but I have found one within walking distance. What I need to know is how much I should expect to pay to wash and dry one load of clothes. What denomination coins will I need?

Second item- the airline broke the pull-up handle on my large suitcase. It was a nightmare dragging that sucker through the airport and onward. Additionally, I failed to realize all the stuff I was going to have to take home with me (new laptop, docking bay, headsets, travel bag, etc.)

SO, I need to know a good place to buy some new luggage asap. I prefer someplace I can get to via the subway, as I have no vehicle. I don't want high-end, but I don't want low-end either. (Looking for something with that formed polyfoam that makes a suitcase durable but lightweight.) Any ideas? (If I were in the US, I'd go to Penney's or Sears. Don't know what the equivalent is here.) Help!

If you need more info, please let me know. I think my office-mates said I can get to the York Mills Mall easily. Does anyone know that mall and what place there would be best to look for luggage? I found a website, but it didn't list the stores that are in the mall, nor did it sound like there were a lot of them. I'm lost and would appreciate any assistance!

Thanks!!!

York Mills is a rather small neighbourhood shopping centre, with a supermarket and drug store as the main tenants. I don`t think it will meet your needs. And it`s about 2km from the nearest subway station.

There are Sears stores in Toronto.

The laundromat likely has a change machine. Just make sure you have Canadian bills that don't have a lot of tears or folded corners. I rarely use a laundromat but the last time I did the dryer took quarters and the washer took loonies ($1).

Stuff a pocket with loonies and toonies and the laundromat will roar to life.
Hotels with customer laundromats are exceedingly rare anywhere. Laundry service, at substantial cost, is very common.
You did not say where in Toronto you are staying, so you can Google to find a Sears or Hudson Bay store near you. Both have good luggage departments with sales almost every weekend. Walmarts are the same as in the US.

Thx all- Took the subway down to Eaton Center mall. Sears had luggage sale on, but still wanted ridiculous prices.

So, I continued on to The Bay where there was also a luggage sale going on! Got a great price on some new Samsonite... 33% cheaper than Sears!

And the entrance to the north-bound subway was right outside the luggage dept door. Change of fortune. Maybe I should go play the lotto.

I was just going to suggest The Bay, but I see you've already been there.
I'm glad you found something on sale. .
Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday .

Wonder what the leaders of Sears are thinking..Many times in the recent months their prices and sales have been ridiculously out of line. Isn't the Bay tied into Lord and Taylor now in some way and are they using Yankee retail know how to increase sales volume??? Heaven forbid that competition is creeping into our land!!!

Don't know about Lord and Taylor, but The Bay just won a $2.9Bn bid to buy Saks.

This acquisition brings together 3 retail icons: HBC (Hudson's Bay Company/The Bay), Lord and Taylor and Saks. In the US, HBC operates L & T.

The HBC/Saks merger was subject to approval oct 30/13.
