Toronto in February
 

Any ideas about where to stay and what to do in Toronto in Feb. for a get-away for a 55 yo couple?

A great many restaurants, some very good indeed, have three course sepecials. Lunch for $10 or $20, dinner for $20 or $30. Beverages, tax, tiops extra, but still a real bargain. the main dining room of the Four Seasons has dinner for $30.

there's a multiu-nation barbecue in front of city hall on Sunday, Feb 6, for instance, and lots of other activities.

Inside the Eaton Center, there are food cooking demos, and on it goes.

Until Feb 19 there's a Cuban art exhibit called Pintura at the Mooishi Gallery, on John Street between Adelaide and Richmond. I was at the opening the other night.

On Feb 11 my daughter sings at the Columbus Center, if you like opera. She's a guest soloist at someone else's recitel. The Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal ontario Museum are open; ceramic museum is in temporary quarters, but open, as is the textiule museum. And -- well worth a visit -- the Bata Shoe Museum is open.

How rich are you? Rich? Stay at the Four Seasons or the Windsor Arms. Medium rich? The Fairmont Royal York.

If you think more like an architect than an engineer; more like a litigastor than a M&A specialist, stay at le Germain.

I can recommend in particular Tafelmusik's concert (it's a superb, period baroque orchestra).

In addition to BAK's suggestions, consider a) the Quality Hotel Midtown (Bloor St W) if you're on a tight budget. It's very close to the subway system, a lively neighbourhood near the University of Toronto and many of the museums and upscale shopping.

Given the winter temperatures, a hotel attached to, or adjacent to the underground PATH system and subway line can be a good idea (although you won't want to spend all your time indoors). Options include the Sheraton Toronto Centre, Cambridge Suites, Fairmont Royal York, Hilton, Marriott Toronto Eaton Centre, King Edward Hotel. Not all of these are attached to the PATH, but the Royal York and Sheraton are.
