Tofino - Middle Beach Lodge vs. Long Beach
I think we're leaning towards Middle Beach vs. Long Beach, but still consdering both.
If you've stayed in either place...and could recommend a particular room type or location, would truly appreciate it! Also, if you've stayed in both...please share your recent impressions. Is the beach/locale perhaps nicer at one place vs. another? If hesitant to share here...not wanting to let your 'secret' out to too many...then, you can email me directly at [email protected] Thanks so much! :-) |

Sorry, but what does "ttt" mean?
I guess I should know? |
Does it mean....
to the top?? Thanks. |
Rose, I used the ttt to push your query back up to the top where it might be seen by folks with Long Beach experience. I have only stayed at Middle Beach and did not want to respond unless no one else did. Well, since no one did, here goes. We stayed at Middle Beach in October a couple of years ago. Weather was grey and rainy, which actually was kind of nice. I liked watching the storms. Our room was spartan, not much furniture, sink in bedroom, smallish bath. We did however have an incredible giant window which gave us a spectacular view of the ocean. We loved it. We went for walks on the beach, sat by the fire in the lodge (which was very nicely decorated), and did a little touring. We are hikers, so we did a bit of that as well. The breakfast was a buffet and it was just fine for us. Cereal, toast, yogurt, and fruit. Some pastries, too. We had a wonderful dinner at the Rainforest Cafe in Tofino and became addicted to the Tofino bars at the Common Loaf.
Enjoy your trip. |
Hello WanderingRose,
We too have stayed at Middle Beach but not Long Beach. There must be a wide variety of rooms available at MBL (Middle Beach Lodge), because ours was quite different from cmcfong's. We had a one bedroom unit with a deck overlooking parts of Mackenzie Beach. This unit included a fully equipped kitchen (including a mini-dishwasher!!), a wooden dining room table with four chairs, a living room/lounging area with a fireplace and TV. The bedroom had a king sized bed from which you had a view to the sea through the large window. There was also a "shutter" window-size opening from the bedroom to the large bathroom, where there was a jetted tub, a separate shower, and the usual sink, counter, toilet etc. It was very romantic; I loved it!! My only negative comment about this unit at MBL was that the closet and storage space was very limited, and if you are staying five days (as we did), it becomes a bit of a problem. Our stay was last February (for our 25th anniversary), we went for the storm watching season, and instead got beautifully clear and sunny days the whole time!! Weird!! Anyway, hope my info helps. |
We were in the accomodations called "At The Beach" which was the adult only area.

I stayed with a friend in the staff housing at the Long Beach Lodge (on Cox Bay), while I had previously stayed with my family at the Ocean Village Resort (on Mackenzie Beach). Both beaches are side by side, separated by rocky coves. Cox Bay, where the Long Beach Lodge is located on is equally as beautiful as Mackenzie Beach, however, it's famous for its large waves, making it a popular beach for surfers.
Mackenzie Beach is more sheltered in comparison to Cox Bay, as it has a long, narrow island a few feet away off the shore. The nice thing about the island is that you get to the island by foot during low tide - it's a rainforest oasis. So, while I don't really have personal experience staying within either lodge, both would give you beautiful locations. |
cmcfong - we stayed at the Beach House Deluxe Sixplex Suites (on the upper level with soaker tubs, the lower suites apprently all have jacuzzi tubs). It was very quiet even though the adjacent suites were occupied (all were couples as far as I could see; the familes seemed to stay in a different location at Middle Beach).

Borealis, I like your style better than ours. Next time I will book as you did.
Thanks for the info. |
We stayed at MBL the first weekend in
November. It was our fourth stay there and this time we took our kids - three adults and one baby. My DH & I stayed in the duplex lodge beside the main lodge - king bed, small balcony - wonderful view. The kids shared a small cabin in a unit next to ours. Kitchenette, fireplace, Q bed on main and a loft with a DB. Again, a small deck overlooking the water. B/c we had a 1 1/2 yr old with us we opted to eat in the dining room both nights. Crab the first night and bbq. salmon the next. As usual, the b/f was good. The comp. soaps, etc. are now L'Occitane products which makes me v. happy. Ate lunch at Sobo - finally got a chance to try the fish taco - delish! Perfect weather - vertical rain/wind the first day and calm sun the second. How I love that place! |
We stayed at Long Beach Lodge last fall in a Rain Forest Cottage. 4 Adults and a toddler. The main lodge was wonderful. I definitely recommend and look forward to a return trip some day. I enjoyed sitting in the lodge, drinking tea and watching the waves. Our daughter enjoyed exploring tide pools with Grandma. My husband liked the hot tub on the back patio of our cottage.
The cottage was perfect for our needs. A living area with fireplace, dining area and fully equipped kitchen. A large bedroom with master bath downstairs and separate bedroom and bath upstairs which worked great for the grandparents. We ate twice in the lodge for dinner and enjoyed two terrific meals. We also ate our special anniversary dinner at The Pointe (good but not better than other meals on the trip). We ate two or three times at Sobo (which we loved!). The gardens were also very quirky in a good way. |
Am planning a trip to this area this summer...please keep the reviews coming! :-)

I would not wait any longer to book either Middle Beach or Long Beach. I attempted to book 5 nights @ Middle Beach Lodge a month ago and had to rearrange my entire trip because all "At The Beach" rooms were booked for 2 of the 4 nights we wanted.
