We like to explore new places in the dead of winter when there are fewer visitors around. I'm considering Tofino in February. I imagine stormy weather and rolling seas, but I think that might add to the wildness of the area. Our plans would be to wear rain gear and hit the beaches and trails. Is there anything else to do there in the winter? I'd appreciate thoughts from anyone with winter experience in the area.

I spent a weekend there in February 2008 and loved it. Less crowds, parks to yourself and the weather really no different than any other time of the year other than there was snow piled up along the sides of the highway on the drive over, and it was a bit colder than the summer months. We had rain, we also had sunshine, and yes... the waves were incredible. February's one of the better times to be there for surfing. The surfers will all be out - quite a sight.

We've been there at the end of February and it's been very
mild - almost balmy - and the ocean was flat as a millpond.

But it was still wonderful.

We go every Winter, most months. Sometimes in February it can be calm and beautiful as the above two have said. I prefer the winter, fantastic winter storms with huge waves some days. Just bring raingear. If you are staying at the big hotels like the Wickaninnish or Long Beach Lodge they provide raingear for you.

The roads can be tough though. Just make sure you have chains and/or good winter tires and take your time if there is snow on the roads.

You can still surf if you are a surfer. The die-hards prefer the winter surf. The trails are all still open and available both in Tofino and Ucluelet.

There will be less people there but also less choice of resteraunts or reduced hours. The major hotels and stores will still be open. The west coast has a different flavor in the winter, but I think you will like it by the sounds of your attitude you dont mind rain.

I have never missed a walk a day without the rain. It always stops for a few hours a day, usually the morning so just take advantage of the dry spells.

We were there over the Christmas holidays and it was an amazing site to see. Huge crashes waves and a big storm came through. Lost power to the house we stayed at, twice! and it was fantastic. We went for walks every day and just made sure to go out in head to toe raingear. That being said on Boxing Day the sun came out, the wind died down and it almost felt like spring.

We are headed back in three weeks for another week of sand, hopefully sun, and surfing.
