Tipping in Restaurants

Although its just across the border, I'm not sure of tipping in Canada. Way back when I was a waitress in the US, it seemed Canadians tipped us 10% when the standard in the US was 15-20%. What's the usual tip for waiters in Canada? What about bartenders? thanks

10% is standard, extra for good service. 0% if they are rude or lousy waiters/waitresses.

This Canadian would say 15% for standard service, %20 for outstanding or higher end restaurants. And less for sub-standard.

and this Canadian would agree with Boots08.

I don't know why some people think that Canadians tip less in general these days. It seems that up until about 20 years ago, tipping 10% might have been "generous" but that is not the case today.

The standard tip is 15% for good decent service. I will tip higher if it is outstanding. If the price of the meal was a bargain I will always give at least 2 or 3 dollars (per person sitting at the table) as the employees shouldn't get less just because the restaurant they work at charges less for meals.

Great story in the paper the other day about the (lack of) amourous skills of poor tippers.

In Ontario, those of us with poor math skills add together the two taxes on food bills, and use this amount, rounded up if approrpriate, and that's around 15 percent.

We tend to base the tip on the pre-tax amount, by the way.

Also agree with Boots08. 15-20% seems fairly standard with the people I know here in Toronto.

Thanks all for the responses. Was in Toronto recently and glad we did the 15-20% tip all around. In my waitressing days, I remember the 10 % tips and even worse when given in Canadian funds, which at the time were much weaker than the US dollar.
Had a great 1 day in TO-forgot what a great city is just around the corner from my hometown (Buffalo) and what nice people are there. We were there with friends from NYC who were amazed at how nice Toronto was, how clean, how civilized, how polite, etc.
