An AP story the other day said there are up to three-hour waits at New York State-Canada border crossings. Is this true? And are the waits shorter on weekdays? Would appreciate any info on recent experiences crossing the NY-canada border. Thanks!

I know it's not New York, but we crossed from Vermont into Quebec last Friday and it took about 2 minutes. I was really surprised that it was so quick. We weren't even asked to provide any identification, just asked where we came from and where we were heading. Our car has Toronto plates and we're a middle aged couple, so maybe we looked ok to the customs people. Even crossing into the US the day before, we got through quickly. I didn't have my birth certificate or passport, just picture ID. My husband, who lives in Canada, but has a US passport, had his passport with him because he has had problems coming back into Canada in the past, but no problems at either end this time.

We crossed a few Sundays ago at the VT/Quebec border at Highgate VT (I89). Took an hour to get through. Every car was being searched and as far as we could tell everyone was being asked for identification.

We live near Canadian border (and use the Champlain crossing) so we visit Montreal very often. The longest wait it was last year in November (about 10 minutes). It takes on average no longer than 2 minutes. It may be longer on Sunday afternoon when Canadiands who spent weekend in the US are returning home. Knowing that, we never travel to Canada on Sundays aftrnoon-evenings. <BR><BR>A few times we saw long lines for trucks.

I don't know which New York State-Canada crossing you have in mind but last evening we drove from Montreal to Lake Placid and it took us maybe a miute to go through
