Tentative Plans for 6 days in Quebec City
I will have a Tuesday-Sunday in Quebec City at the end of July, staying with a friend (who has kindly volunteered to be guide and driver). She's given me some ideas of things we can do and I've been reading guidebooks, looking at websites, etc. and this is the list that I've come up with. We both like hiking (although in my late 60s, I have limits). I like nature, art, history, architecture and different landscapes. Home for me is middle Georgia so I am tired of staying in because of the heat and humidity. I have never been to Canada.
Friend wants me to have my own list for us to talk about over Zoom next week so here it is, I am hoping for feedback from you all. My sources seemed to switch back and forth from English to French names, I may have places listed twice for all I know.
Outdoor Activities
· Day 1 Ile d’Orleans (Probably an all day excursion? Guidebook says Saint-Jean prettiest village, Saint-Pierre has oldest church, best views from Rue Horation Walks on Sainte-Petronille). Picnic? Buy fresh fruits and vegs there? Would it be possible/practical to visit Chute Montmorency this day? Guidebook says it is “nearby”? A webpage says one can see Montmorency Falls from Vignoble Ste-Petronille on Ile d’Orleans and says we can walk through lavender fields at the gardens of La Seigneurie de l’ile d’Orleans *
· Day 2 Old Quebec City (Stroll the walls * Maybe walk on boardwalk of the Terrasse Dufferin? Walk Basse-Ville? Basilique Cathedrale Notre Dame de Quebec (guided tours/reservations required) Chateau Frontenac (look at the outside) and Governors’ Garden behind it* Convent des Urselines and museum* Saint-Louis Forts and Chateaux National Historic Site Place Royale (guidebook says this area has lots of 18th century architecture) *
· Day 3 Plains of Abraham (Battlefields Park includes Plains of Abraham, Artillery Park – starting point for 1 hour guided tour and visit to the forts, is this the same as Citadelle de Quebec? guided tour can depend on how much time we have).
· Day 4 Jacques Cartier National Park (an all day excursion, picnic, landscape shaped by glaciers, Hikes – several short/medium loops, an hourly rental of canoe on calm water possibility if exhausted by hiking)!
· Possible Day 5 Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area (Hiking trails, historic trail, picnic, includes marshes, swamps, plains, forests – is on rocky upland of the St. Lawrence River)
· Possible Day 6 Mont Wright (Hiking, great views of the city, would it require rock climbing?)
· Possible Day 5 or 6 Montmorency Falls (Looks beautiful but very busy – sunds different, according to which guidebook/website I look at!)
· Possible Day 5 or 6 Canots Legare (near host's home, on St. Charles River, rent canoe for a couple of hours)
Possible Day 5 or 6 Mont-Sainte-Anne (Hiking? Ride panoramic gondola to the top for 360 panoramic view? y guide book says best trail is a 20 minute walk from the car park to Chutes Jean Larouse.)
Bois-de-Coulonge Park has plant sculptures exhibit and multimedia forest walk?* Is this close enough to fit with Plains of Abraham?
· Ile d’Quarantine or Grosse Ile and the Irish Memorial (Is this some distance beyond Ile d’ Orleans? It is a suggestion of my host.)
· Lotbiniere Forest Trails (Would this be different landscape than Jacques Cartier park? Also suggested as possibility by my host)
· Laval University (Perhaps short drive through or walking spot at some point in trip when we are nearby?)
Indoors
· Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church
· Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral
· Murrain Center Library **
· Musee de Quebec (near Plains of Abraham)*
· Musee de Civilization **
Ordinary Places To Visit
· Local grocery store
· Local produce market
· Local library
·
The museums would be worked in on the Plains of Abraham and Old Quebec days, I suppose. Also not expecting to take all the outdoor trips listed. Pope Francis will be in Quebec City for a couple of days when I'm there so that will impact schedule, also weather, of course.
I will also have 2 1/2 days in Montreal after this, will send plans out for that later. I promise a trip report when I return -- thanks for all help.
