Teen Shopping in Montreal
 

Bringing teen daughter to Montreal for four days and would like to know where we should shop for funky/vintage/eclectic/fun items. We are staying in Vieux Montreal...is this ok for convenience?

Vieux Montreal shopping is mainly tee shirt shops and some really expensive geared toward tourist shops.
St Catherine Street is where you have to take them..one boutique after another and record stores.
Ailes, Simons, and Ogilvy..
You will like Holt Renfrew!

And rue St Denis!! Just one shop after another, they will have a ball..sort of reminded me of Haight Ashbury.

I've never really thought of Holt's and Ogilvey's as funky, and as far as I know, they only sell new clothes.

I'd try St. Laurent, north of Sherbrooke Street, myself, assuming I turn into a teenage girl. Or had one to take shopping.

It's a long walk from Old Montreal to this part of town, or a short cab ride.

Ogilvys has a great MAC makeup shop that is always full of young ladies trying out and buying make up.
You are forgiven for not knowing, if you are a guy~

Old Montreal is charming, but not the best shopping area. Downtown has the large dept stores, and countless other stores, many in the underground malls. St Laurent and St. Denis are probably what you are looking for - lots of stores and trendy shops of all kinds. For really funky, there are some interesting second hand and 'goth' type places on Mt. Royal street near St. Laurent.
If you don't mind walking, you can walk to the downtown from the old city - it's about a 20 minute uphill walk. Just walk west on St. Catherine when you reach it. East on St. Catherine near St. Laurent is a bit seedy, but as you walk up St. Laurent, it gets better.
You can also catch the Metro to the Sherbrooke stop which is a few blocks from the heart of all the shops on St. Denis - a real fun area.

thanks! now..do you think we are better off staying downtown or on the edge of vieux M in order to access all of these great shops? we are coming very end of march, therefore weather is prob. pretty 'iffy'.

If your primary goal is shopping, downtown or the St. Denis area should be your choice. Late March can be raw and windy - not fun walking to the Metro from the old city. A teen might enjoy the big hotels downtown, with an indoor pool. The Marriot Courtyard on Sherbrooke has a large glassed in pool that overlooks the city, and is two blocks from the shopping on St. Catherine. If you prefer to be closer to the more French neighborhoods of St. Laurent-St.Denis, then consider the Crowne Plaza which is about 10 blocks east on Sherbrooke.
