Taking a rental car from US to Canada

I'm trying to locate a car rental company that will allow me to drive the car from Albany to Montreal and won't charge mileage or fees, any ideas?

We drove from NY State to Montreal using Avis last year. As far as I remember, here were no extra fees for crossing the border. And we definitely confirmed that with them before.

I have had no trouble with Avis or Hertz as long as I let them know in advance.

Now, as an American, you will have a problem crossing over in a Canadian car without a written endorsement.

Thanks for the info, if I rent the car in NY, drive to Canada, and then back to NY I shouldn't have to register it, right?

I have not had to do that. Just be sure you have the rental contract with you in the vehicle when you cross the border, particularly when re-entering the USA.

When entering Canada by car, I have never had to show any kind of documentation.

The problems lately have arisen when I returned to the USA. Given the current situation, I would asks the US rental car agent for a statement saying that I had permission to visit Canada in that particular vehicle.

It may totally unnecessary, but I have heard some strange tales lately about border crossing in rental vehicles.

Usually it is the US folks raising the difficulty level.

Also, if you have a passport, take it for re-entry purposes.
