Stop between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste Marie

We will be leaving SSM in early afternoon to drive the north shore of Superior. Where is a good place to stop for the night? We will have been in the UP for a week and are wandering (west) home. I expect this will be very scenic. Anyone familiar with the road have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. CJ

The only real choices are Wawa, about 3 hrs from the Sault, and Marathon, about 2 hrs beyond Wawa.

Lake Superior Provincial Park is exceptionally scenic. It is worth spending at least an afternoon and easily a couple of days if you're into hiking, exploring, photography, etc. You could then spend the night just a bit up the highway in the town of Wawa which has a number of motels and a few restaurants plus a scenic waterfall nearby. It has been years since we drove beyond Wawa, but I seem to remember that most communities between Wawa and Thunder Bay were quite small. Marathon which is just over halfway is another possibility although I don't remember much about the town. There are some additional scenic Provincial Parks on the way to Thunder Bay including Ouimet Canyon and Sleeping Giant.

Thank you! It seems that Wawa is it.
