St Andrews or Saint John or? Where to stay?

I plan to be travelling from Bar Harbor, ME to catch the ferry from St. John, New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia in mid August. The ferry leaves at midday. So we will need to be in 3 hours max. driving distance of St John overnight.

Any suggestions as which location is a good place to stay overnight? St Andrews looks a good distance. Or does St John have enough to see to make it worth getting there the previous afternoon? Will have spent time up along the coast of Maine, and will spend time in Nova Scotia, PEI, and Quebec afterwards.

Any recommendations for budget cottages or similar (2 rooms) would be welcome as well...

Many thanks,
Phil

St. Andrews is a very nice little tourist town - shops, cafes, sailboats, botanical gardens, boating tours, and the Huntsman Marine Science Centre Aquarium. According to google maps, a little over an hour drive to St. John.

St. John is a nice enough small city, but I would lean towards St. Andrews if you want somewhere pleasant to stroll around for a few hours in the afternoon and evening, with a couple of optional activities nearby.

I don't know about budget cottages though in that area. Last time I stayed there several years ago we got a very nice moderately priced small apartment built over some of the downtown shops that I found online but I think they preferred longer rentals than overnights.

Although you get some appreciation of the Fundy Tides in either St. Andrews or St. John - they are more dramatic further in e.g. Alma and especially Hopewell Rocks - so you may want to include stops at these places during your tour, maybe on the way back.

I found a B&B in St John that I am going to stay at this July (so I don't have any experience, just a link for you to check out)
