Smokers - What do you do?

We just spent a weekend at a high-end hotel in Victoria. The place was lovely, but our trip was ruined by the guests next door to us. The hotel was a non-smoking hotel but this didn't stop the people next to us who were smoking non-stop. Unfortunately we had a room with an adjoining door and smoke came under the door and into our room. We called the front desk to complain and they talked to the smokers who said they were only smoking on their deck. NOT! To make a long story short, we ended up having to move to another room. Has anyone else had this experience? If so, what did you do?

Hi, leuk: We had the exact same experience on our last 2 trips to Palm Beach. The first time we told the front desk. They called the smoker & reminded him that he was on a non-smoking floor & that smoking was not permitted. He said " Sorry, I won't smoke anymore". End of story. The second time the smoker flatly refused to stop smoking when the Front Desk called him to remind him of the n/s policy. He said that he was "paying good money" & that if he wanted to smoke "out on the balcony" he would. He stood out on his balcony & puffed away sometimes @ 6 in the morning (in the dark!), sometimes @ 7 in the evening when we were out on our adjoining balcony. His smoke wafted right over to our balcony & into our room(we had the balcony doors open as the weather was beautiful!)Fortunately, he checked out 3 days later but for 3 days it was disgusting. The answer is simple: The non-smoking floor policy has to include balconies! And, if somebody is smoking on a n/s floor/balcony he is the one who has to move to a smoking area...not you!!

A wet towel stretched along the bottom of the door is what most fire departments recommend to prevent smoke infiltration.

Point taken about sealing off the door with a wet towel. This shouldn't be necessary if people were considerate enough to follow the hotel's policy.

However,we also had the same trouble that wow had. Sometimes the smokers went on their deck and if we kept the patio door open to air our room out, their smoke blew into our room.

And, you cannot seal off the balcony w/ a towel!! LOL ;)

Many hotels now have fines ($500) for people who smoke in rooms and this is pretty strictly enforced.
