I am driving from Niagara Falls, Canada to Old Quebec. Need advice on how to get there in less then 9 hours( this is appr. time Mapquest canada gave me). Any suggestions?

There is pretty well only one route Im assuming that Mapquest gave you and Ive driven it so so many times and there are no shortcuts.

You could try driving through New York State (Thruway and I87), but the time spent on border crossings might be longer than traffic delays getting through Toronto and Montreal.

Less than 9 hours depends on traffic, and how little you wish to enjoy the scenery.

In medium traffic, the flow is usually about 110 -120, and almost the entire way is on limited access highways.

But you do have to get through Canada's two largest cities, and, in Monreal, one or two or more bridges. (The two Ontario bridges usully do not slow anyone down)

Ontario Provincial Police use air patrols, making speeding unattractive.

Some of the service centers undergoing reconstruction have been reopened, and some were still closed last weekend.

Definition of when yiou've arrived may vary; reaching the north shore in suburban QC may mean you're there to some people, andothers mightcount arrived as getting out of the car inside the walls.

Leave Niagara Falls at 5:30 and you'll beat Toronto traffic and hit Montreal early afternoon. Traffic probably not too bad.

Leave Niagara Falls at 8:00 and you'll hit slow traffic Hamilton through Toronto, and probably the start of bad traffic in Montreal.

And trying for 9 hours means missing Thousands Islands Parkway.

If all goes well you can make it in 9 hours, but I wouldn't count on it. There are too many unpredictable factors such as the traffic through Toronto and Montreal and highway construction on 401 which has made for considerable delays this summer. You can get around Toronto reasonably well by taking the toll road Hwy 407 at Burlington.

You should be aware that there many construction sites on Quebec highways this summer leading to major delays. The website will give you a good idea of them.


Driving through New York State you will avoid driving through Toronto and Montreal but the delays at the border are unpredictable as well. You can get an idea of border crossing times here:

Bottom line--if you really have to do this in 9 hours or less, choose a different means of transportation.
